Since I moved back to Slackware as my major system, I wanted to make SlackBuild scripts and SlackBuilds.org a bit easier to deal with. Therefore I wrote myself several small tools, collectively called sboutils. I will be busy in the following weeks, so I decided to call its current stage as first release candidate 0.01_beta.

GTK2-only Xfce 4.12 desktop

I want to keep using a GTK2-based desktop environment on the upcoming Slackware 15.0 release. Long story short, I decided to stay with Xfce 4.12 and created my own repository of SlackBuild scripts that aim to build a GTK2-only desktop on -current. I have been running it for over a month on Slackware -current from 17 May 2021. Here’s my announcement in LQ. Of course, this comes with no warranty, so use at your own risk.

Slackalaxy at GitHub

Well, I finally took the time to set up a GitHub repo (https://github.com/slackalaxy). I started testing my SlackBuilds on Slackware 15.0 beta here. At the moment I am making sure sources build, fix broken links, etc. This is all only on x86_64 for now.

Slackware and SlackBuilds.org cited in a scientific publication

The latest paper from our research group has just been published in Scientific Reports. A big part of the work was done in silico, using different software tools and databases. All bioinformatics software used locally was installed on a Slackware64 system, almost exclusively from the scripts at SlackBuilds.org. With this post, I would like to give my sincere thanks to Slackware and the SlackBuilds.org community.

Own packages repository

I decided to try and make my own repository of precompiled packages from SBo. Exactly the same idea as SlackOnly, but made by me for my own use (not public). The tool to use is SlackRepo, which has extensive documentation, that I highly recommend. This post is not meant as a tutorial on how to use SlackRepo. It merely lists the settings I used and the steps I took for my own use.
