Freetype hinting mode

I immediately noticed that hinting was awful. I tried changing the settings in Xfce, but there was no improvement. Finally, I realised that it should be set up elsewhere.

Disable GTK3 window management

Under Xfce, I have experienced hiccups with Evince when maximized: it would refuse to unmaximize the window (or rather, does not remember the dimensions of the unmaximized window) and behaves kinda “sticky” to desktop borders. In another case, if I have the compositor turned off, the window edges are not smoothened and look ugly.

QT5 screen scale factor

I found a fix of Calibre, however, it seems this problem occurs for other QT5 programs. For example, I installed AlienBob’s VLC package, version 3.0.4 on Slackware64 14.2 and noticed the same issue. So, a more general solution should be found.
