Tale of Two Wastelands

Let me start by saying that this post has nothing to do with Slackware or Linux. I am a Fallout 3 / New Vegas fan and recently I had to set up Tale of Two Wastelands. Unfortunately, I was not able to find written instructions, just a video. For me, that’s very inconvenient, therefore I decided to write down a few notes.

You are very welcome to watch the video, as it explains everything. Below is what I did and what seems to work fine for me on Windows 7 pro (SP1).

Prerequisites

Each game must be started at least once! I have the games from GOG:

First, let’s collect everything that we need. I put in brackets the current version of each download. I will need to extract 7z archives and I will use mods:

Download the actual TTW installer and updates, which at the moment are:

The New Vegas Script Extender (NVSE) and plugin:

Preparation

  • Install and start Mod Organizer 2 (MO2).
  • Select: Change Game → New (Create new Instance) → TTW
  • Select TTW
  • The video recommends to change where MO2 places new instance directories (the default folder is in AppData). Go to: Settings → Paths → Base directory
  • Set it to C:\Modding\New Vegas Mods:

  • Navigate there and make sure you create sub-folder mods\Tale of Two Wastelands. You can use, of course a different path. Just don’t forget to specify it in the steps below.

Installation

  • Extract the 3.2 Installer. There are two files that can be used to install TTW. The default is the TTW Install.exe, and it will fix cracking audio, for example when someone talks over an intercom. This will take some time, depending on your CPU. The alternative is the TTW Install Without OGG Reencoding.bat, which does not do re-encoding, but the installation is much faster.
  • Start either TTW Install.exe or TTW Install Without OGG Reencoding.bat. I used the bat file. It showed a window where three paths should be set:

  • before you click Install, make sure the paths are correct and specify the folder for Tale of two Wastelands:

Fallout 3 (this was autodetected)

C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Fallout 3

Fallout: New Vegas (this was autodetected)

C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Fallout New Vegas

Tale of Two Wastelands (I created and specified the folder)

C:\Modding\New Vegas Mods\mods\Tale of Two Wastelands

Update

  • Extract 3.2.1 Incremental Update and 3.2.2 Incremental Update.
  • There are README files for each, so check them. In short, place the updater mpi files in the folder of the 3.2 Installer.
  • Install the required Visual C++ Runtime Library.
  • Run TTW Install.exe or TTW Install Without OGG Reencoding.bat, depending on what you used.
  • It will ask what update you want, so select them consecutively, going 3.2 → 3.2.1 → 3.2.2.
  • A window where three paths should be set will appear:

  • For each update, make sure paths are correct:

Fallout: New Vegas (same as before)

C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Fallout New Vegas

Tale of Two Wastelands v3.2 (this is where I installed TTW)

C:\Modding\New Vegas Mods\mods\Tale of Two Wastelands

Tale of Two Wastelands v3.2.1 (same)

C:\Modding\New Vegas Mods\mods\Tale of Two Wastelands

Post install

  • Start MO2 and check that everything is loaded properly, as shown in the video.
  • Install the JIP LN NVSE Plugin via MO2 and make sure it is loaded, too. It requires that NVSE is installed by copying the .dll and .exe files to the Fallout New Vegas directory:
C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Fallout New Vegas

However, when I checked, they were already there, so I did not copy them over. Maybe they are of an older version? Maybe there are differences between FNV distributed by GOG and Steam? I will investigate and post here. Also, any help is welcome!

Start the game :)

I was able to use a vanilla New Vegas save file and then travelled to the Capital Wasteland. I had to install the TTW Custom Race Ending in order to continue into Broken Steel.

For now the game works quite well. Here’s a gallery, where the screenshot below is from.

You aren’t supposed to install the game to Program Files (x86), as UAC monitors and protects those folders which will interfere with the game and mods. The correct installation steps, in TEXT, are on the website immediately next to the download link.

yep, things has changed since 2 years ago and this tutorial is no longer relevant.
