This is something regarding the future of my favourite Linux distribution. There has been this post at LinuxQuestions by Slackware maintainer Patrick Volkerding about the financial situation of the distribution (and his own). It is quite bad. The discussion is about how we can help. A couple of days later, there was another post by Patrick discussing his plans on different methods for donations. In the bottom, there is a link to his personal PayPal account.
I decided to make a ‘budget upgrade’ on the computer that I use for checking my SlackBuilds and I bought an ASRock 970 Pro3 R2.0 motherboard and an AMD FX8350 CPU. So, compared to my old FX4100 processor, I now have twice more cores and a bit higher clockspeed. The old CPU and motherboard, in turn, found their use to upgrade another PC. Unfortunatelly, I did not get the hardware sensors to work out-of-the-box with the new motherboard. As a result, I was not able to monitor the CPU temperature, which (for me) is quite important. As a maintainer at SlackBuilds.org, I try to keep my scripts updated. Normally, I would just go through the list of SlackBuilds that I maintain and check each project’s website for updates. It is time consuming and (worst) really boring. I recently came across a very useful website — Repology, the packaging hub.
